Even the island paradise of Ile des Pins has its dark secrets locked in the vault of history. Discover some of the remaining structures and ruins from the penal colony that was built here more than 100 years ago, during the time of French colonization.
Your local guide leads you to explore the remnants of a prison compound, now covered by tropical vegetation. You'll see the old water tower, ruins of a convent, and the final resting place of the deportees. These reminders of a distant and grisly past are shrouded in flora -- slowly being reclaimed by nature.
Visit Chez Lylone -- land returned to the islander family after the end of the penal colony era. They invite you to enjoy some free time on their family beach and to stroll among the lush beautiful gardens.
Notes::
Bring reef-safe/biodegradable sunscreen and a hat. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Maximum age is 80 years.
