Huatulco is one of Mexico's less-discovered gems. On this delicious journey, you will see the city's highlights and taste its bounty.
You're headed to La Crucecita -- Huatulco's charming town center. Follow your guide on a stroll through the zocalo -- the lush main square where musicians often play.
Visit the Church of the Virgin of Guadalupe to admire the ceiling or enjoy some free time to set out on your own, meeting up with your guide later at the appointed time and place.
At the Regional Handicrafts Museum -- in fact a marketplace and not a museum -- you will meet fifth-generation artisans from Teotitlán del Valle. See how they use grana cochinilla (cactus bugs) to produce brilliantly colorful thread. The thread is elemental in creating their beautiful rugs, blankets and clothing.
You'll also participate in a Mexican cooking demonstration. Taste homemade tortillas and quesadillas fresh from the oven, as well as regional products like mezcal (Oaxaca's smoky cousin to tequila) and chocolate that rivals the best of Switzerland. If you prefer to shop, you're in luck. La Crucecita is home to stylish boutiques selling a wide variety of handicrafts that you can explore on your own.
Savor lunch at Macuil Restaurant, whose chefs have created a taste of Huatulco just for your group. They take their inspiration from chef Andrew Zimmerman's recipes, serving shrimp with green chilis and avocado-tomatillo sauce.
An easy walk returns you to the ship.
Notes:
Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Terrain includes uneven surfaces. Bring local currency for shopping at the market or street stands.
