Take your experience to the next level on this day trip to the historic district of Panama City (El Casco Antiguo). You’ll travel by bus and by foot to see to this UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Panama Canal, which both offer captivating looks at how Panama has evolved over time.
Board your air-conditioned bus and travel approximately 90 minutes across the isthmus. Head up the coastline and learn about the piracy that is part of this area's history.
Founded in 1519, Panamá Viejo is a historic treasure in Panama, where evocative ruins of the original Spanish settlement reflect the early the early days of European colonization in the Americas. It is the oldest European settlement on the Pacific coast of the Americas.
Abandoned in the mid-17th century, it was replaced by El Casco Antiguo, a historic district that enchants visitors with its beautifully restored colonial architecture, vibrant cultural scene, and picturesque views of the modern skyline. This offers a captivating blend of old-world charm and contemporary vitality.
On a leisurely 45-minute walk, appreciate the many changes of the city by viewing its unique architecture, influenced by a wonderful blend of French, Spanish and Italian styles. Most of Panama City´s main monuments are located in Casco Antiguo. During your walk you will see The Presidential Palace, The National Theater and Plaza Bolivar.
Next, explore like a local during some free time in Casco Antiguo. You might admire street art, try local food, or check out the views.
Continue to the Miraflores Locks Observation Center to view a documentary on the history of the locks. This captivating vantage point gives visitors the chance to witness the fascinating spectacle of ships transitioning the Panama Canal, providing insight into this engineering marvel’s operation and history. You will also have the opportunity for a close-up view of ships passing through the locks from the top floor of the center.
Board your transportation and pass the former Canal Zone where the former American military installations are a reminder of the area's strategic importance.
Finally, a shopping stop for arts and crafts is scheduled at Fort Amador on your way back to the pier.
Please note: Ship sightings at the Miraflores Locks Observation Center are not guaranteed. Tour requires walking on cobblestones and other uneven surfaces. Some waiting time should be expected. Tour sequence may vary. A light snack is provided. The Panama Canal Authority assigns specific time slots for the transit of a vessel through the locks. The ship will anchor in a designated area and will wait for instructions. Once clearance is transmitted to the ship, procedures begin to bring the ship's tour passengers ashore. Therefore, tour departure times may vary and will be announced onboard. The return time of the ship to Colón may also be delayed due to transit through the locks. We recommend that you are prepared for any potential delay of the ship's arrival to Colón and plan accordingly by bringing any needed medication or essential items on tour. Facilities are available at the terminal in Colón while waiting for the ship's arrival in case of delay.
