Gatún Lake was created during the building of the Panama Canal because raising the water level across the isthmus meant that excavations did not have to be so vast. A large earthen wall was built, villages were flooded and the water rose to form Gatún Lake.
Depart the pier for a scenic approximately 45-minute drive to a local marina, where you will gear up and away you go -- paddling a kayak on the Panama Canal itself. You'll have approximately 1¾ hours to paddle among the islands of Gatún Lake. There are 1,368 species of vascular plants, 93 species of mammals and as many as 366 species of birds in this area.
You will also visit the Agua Clara Locks Lookout to see the Panama Canal in operation -- a great marvel of modern engineering and an unforgettable experience.
Your kayak paddle ends in Colón, where you will re-join the ship.
Notes:
Maximum weight is 250 lbs. Minimum age is 9 years. Double kayaks are used. Tour departs from Gatún Lake and ends in Colón where you will re-join the ship. You may arrive in Colón before the ship does. Suitable for adventurous and physically-fit participants. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. The Panama Canal Authority assigns specific time slots for the transit of a vessel through the locks. The ship will anchor in a designated area and will wait for instructions. Once clearance is transmitted to the ship, procedures begin to bring the ship's tour passengers ashore. Therefore, tour departure times may vary and will be announced onboard. The return time of the ship to Colón may also be delayed due to transit through the locks. We recommend that you are prepared for any potential delay of the ship's arrival to Colón and plan accordingly by bringing any needed medication or essential items on tour. Facilities are available at the terminal in Colón while waiting for the ship's arrival in case of delay.
