In Costa Rica -- the land of pura vida (pure life) -- lies Macaw Lodge Private Reserve. This is an oasis of biodiversity that spans 247 acres forests, ranging from dry to humid. The lodge is entirely dedicated to the preservation of the area's rich natural diversity and ancient history.

Begin in the orchards, where your knowledgeable guide shows you the sustainable gardening operations. You will see how the lodge uses aquaponics to grow vegetables, and how it uses organic systems to fertilize the land.

Next, you'll walk along a trail that winds approximately half a mile through the deep forest. On the way, you'll learn about the native plants and animals. Your efforts are rewarded at the end with a stunning waterfall, where you'll have time to take a refreshing swim.

After visiting the gardens and plantations, the chef will share the philosophy of farm-to-table cooking at this self-sufficient eco-lodge, where 75% of the food served in the restaurant is produced on-site; including rice, beans, corn, cacao, vegetables and fruits.

Together with the chef, use local recipes and organically-grown ingredients to prepare a homemade and homegrown fusion lunch, which you'll enjoy in the restaurant. It's a taste of Costa Rica at its most pure.


Wear light comfortable clothing, long pants and a poncho if it's raining. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, biodegradable sunscreen and a hat. Bring insect repellent and bottled water. Vegetarian, celiac, vegan and special diets can be accommodated with advance notice.
