Approximately 3¼ Hours
Sweet-tooths and history buffs, come discover this fair island. Few people know that it was originally named St Christopher, by none other than Christopher Columbus, in 1493. Later, it was shortened to St Kitts. A range of cultures has influenced St Kitts and, today, one of the island's top flavors is chocolate.
Walk through Basseterre -- St Kitts' capital and a charming West Indian town that is rich in history and architectural character.
You'll visit the National Museum -- a gorgeous stone building from the 1800s.
Continue on foot past the lush Pretoria Gardens and Berkeley Memorial, and to the clocktower known as the Circus. This landmark is positioned at the bottom of Fort Street, named for the strategic fort that once guarded the harbor.
Next, you'll step inside the majestic Anglican St George's Church, built in 1670. Notice the unusual volcanic stonework as your guide relates the history of this National Monument.
Independence Square is a landmark with a complicated history. It used to be known as Pall Mall Square and was the site of a slave market. Impressive structures with French and Victorian architectural flourishes border the square along with a lavish cathedral -- a photographer's dream.
Finally, you will reach the St Kitts Chocolate Factory, where a team of internationally-trained chocolatiers produce handcrafted gourmet products. They use the finest ingredients from Belgium and beyond. Indulge your taste buds with the heavenly flavors and listen as your guide explains how cacao is transformed into a variety of flavors -- white, milk, dark, red and even green chocolate. In a hands-on workshop, take advantage of the opportunity to create your very own indulgent chocolate masterpiece. Try out one of the creative molds to give it a distinctive personality. Your chocolate work of art will be freeze-blasted and packaged for you to take home. Other sweet treats are also available for purchase if you wish.
