In the 1840’s, Santo Tomas de Castilla was colonized by the Belgians, who were attracted to this land of tropical landscapes and dense forests. These days, this bustling port on the east coast of Guatemala is a jumping-off point for exploring a diverse region known for its ancient Mayan culture, its lush rain forests, and its pretty beaches. On this tour, you’ll head to a laid-back beachfront resort where you can enjoy a day of leisure and try some of the region’s most delicious seafood.

Your journey kicks off as you board a (pre-paid) water taxi for the scenic trip to Amatique Bay. Soak in the sea breezes and gaze at the swaying palms lining the shoreline. Your destination is a charming resort with a sandy beach. There’s so much to do here. Play a game of beach volleyball. Swim in the large pool and order drinks at the pool bar. Rent kayaks to explore the bay. Pick up some souvenirs in the impressive shopping area. Or just chill out and while away the hours relaxing on the beach.

The highlight of the day is getting a chance to sample one of the most delicious flavors of the region: lobster. These aren’t the bright-red crustaceans with big claws that come from places like Maine. In this part of the world, the lobster is spiny and the sweet meat is located in the tail. You’ll get to enjoy this tasty Caribbean lobster during a special barbeque lunch hosted just for Holland America guests. It’s definitely a meal to remember in a tropical paradise setting.
