Approximately 12½ Hours
Enjoy an approximately 2½-hour escorted train ride from Rostock to Oranienburg, which is located 20 miles north of Berlin. During the journey, your host will hand out a light breakfast snack, coffee and a city map of Berlin.
Arriving in Oranienburg, meet your local guide at the train platform and board a motorcoach.
A short drive brings you to the Sachsenhausen Memorial Site. Sachsenhausen, built in 1933, was one of the first Nazi concentration camps. The first internees were communists and other political prisoners. Although this was not a 'Death Camp' like Auschwitz or Treblinka, thousands of prisoners died here, mostly of starvation. In 1958, the camp became an international memorial site in what was then East Germany and has been preserved to honor the memory of those who lost their lives here. See the hospital rooms and Station Z where executions took place. In the former barracks, a museum tells its grisly history. The former laundry is now a chapel.
Re-board the motorcoach for the drive from Sachsenhausen to Berlin, which takes approximately 45 minutes. Upon arrival in Berlin you will enjoy a traditional lunch at a local restaurant.
Your guide introduces you to some of the most important sights in the German capital, including the Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, and the Holocaust Memorial.
Head back to Rostock in the late afternoon. A light snack is served on the train.
