Horta, Azores, Portugal
Around the Islands by 4x4
Information not currently available.
Hit the road by 4x4 vehicle to see the sights around Faial's western coast.
Dominating the center of Faial, the caldeira is the vast crater of the extinct Cabeço Gordo volcano and is the island's highest point at 3,421 feet asl. The landscape consists of green slopes of junipers, tree-heather, cedars and ferns. Marvel at the laurel forest and ultra-green carpet of lush vegetation that surrounds the one-mile-wide crater.
You will stop for photos at Espalamaca, offering picture-perfect views of the port, the charming town of Horta guarded by a 98-foot-tall cross, and the neighboring islands of Pico, São Jorge and Graciosa.
The island's split personalities are showing, with green valleys and pastures giving way to a barren volcanic landscape. As you head back to Horta, you'll pass the azure waters of Varadouro Bay and the village of Capelo, which sits in the shadow of the Capelinhos volcano.
