Begin your tour with a drive to Butrint, one of the many ancient Greek colonies on the Illyrian coast that later became a key city in the Roman Empire.

Visit the Butrint Archaeological Park -- once an important Greco-Roman port city now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inhabited continuously from the 7th century BC, until it was abandoned in the 18th century, Butrint features impressive walls reminiscent of ancient Mycenae. However, most of the noteworthy excavated remains are early Greek and Roman, including the circular baptistery from the 6th century AD, paved with fine mosaics.

Marvel at the Blue Eye Spring -- a pool of deep blue water so named because its electric-blue edges make it look like the iris of a human eye. The spring is enveloped in thick woods, adding to the eerie nature of the place. The twelve-headed dragon that used to live here (according to legend) is now gone, so you can quite safely approach the pool for a rather mesmerizing look at its stunning color scheme.
