The Panoramic Landscape tour
Information not currently available.
Approximately 3 Hours
A young town in the context of Europe's ancient tapestry, Mariehamn was founded in 1861 -- back when Åland and Finland formed part of the mighty Russian Empire. Maria, consort of Czar Alexander II of Russia gave the town her name.
Mariehamn grew up around the farming village of Övernäs, situated on a peninsula. The harbors built in sheltered bays here came to be of great importance. The streets of Mariehamn are wide and straight. A distinctive feature of the town is the Esplanade -- an avenue of lime trees stretching from west to east, from harbor to harbor.
First, you will get acquainted with the center of Mariehamn, seeing its most important sights. You will also see part of the archipelago, and panoramic views of Åland from the scenic viewpoint at Badhusberget.
Taking the scenic road to Järsö Island, enjoy the beautiful archipelago road with its many bridges. Your guide tells you all about the island's history en route.
On the way back, stop for traditional Åland pancakes with coffee or tea.
You will also visit the marina area, where wooden boats are built and repaired in accordance with age-old tradition. The SALT handicraft shop, in the same vicinity, is where local artisans manufacture and sell their products. Local art, ceramics, jewelry, chocolates, clothes and other items are available.
Your tour ends back at the pier.
Tour requires minimal walking.
