Discover the geology, history and wildlife of Magnetic Island, named for its supposed magnetic effect on Captain Cook's ship compass when he sailed past in1770 (which turned out to be a navigation error).
Travel 20 minutes by fast catamaran ferry cross the clear blue waters of Cleveland Bay to Magnetic Island. More than half of the island is reserved as a National Park, which has preserved stunning scenery and habitats for koalas, possums and rock wallabies as well as a variety of birds. Where the headlands meet the sea, secluded beaches have formed -- many of which can only be reached on foot or by boat.
See Magnetic Island's highlights on a guided bus tour, including a photo stop along the way. You'll encounter native wildlife on a guided ranger tour of Bungalow Bay Koala Village, where you can hold a koala or baby crocodile for a souvenir photograph (at your own expense).
Afternoon tea is served in the alfresco dining area before returning to the Nelly Bay Ferry Terminal for your transfer back to Townsville.
Terrain is uneven. The ramp to board the ferry may be steep. Duration of the tour may vary slightly due to ferry departure times.
