Meet the team from the dive center on the pier. They will assist you with registration, answer any questions, and make recommendations on equipment requirements to ensure a perfect fit. A 10- to 15-minute journey through the historical town of Mahahual brings you to the dive center itself.

Meet your dive master and gear up with all equipment; then, head to a dive boat. Each dive boat is custom built for diving on the reef and holds between 6 and 12 divers.

The team will offer assistance with equipment setup and provide a thorough briefing of the boat and dives, including depth, time, signals and marine life. Maximum group size is six divers to one certified dive master/instructor.

The first dive will be to a maximum depth of 60 feet for 45-50 minutes followed by a 30-minute surface interval. The second dive will be to a maximum depth of 40 feet for 45-50 minutes (dependent upon your air consumption).

Travel time to each dive site by boat will be no more than 10 minutes, as the Barrier Reef is very close to the shore, with many wonderful sites with amazing plateaus beginning at 20 feet.

The dive will take place on the magnificent Meso-American Barrier Reef -- the largest barrier reef system in the Northern Hemisphere. The particular area where you will be diving is extremely healthy with an abundance of beautiful corals and extraordinary reef formations, creating astonishing swim-throughs and ledges.

Common marine life experienced includes turtles, lobsters, stingrays, nurse sharks, eels, king crabs, and barracuda, as well as a variety of tropical reef fish such as damsels, butterfly fish, pork fish, parrot fish and schools of Creole wrasse, blue tangs and lion fish.

Return to the ship. Time permitting, guests who wish to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so, but must return to the ship on their own. Taxis are abundant. Once a fishing village, Mahahual is now a small town thriving with wonderful beachfront shops, restaurants, bars, and arts and crafts booths.

Notes:

Wear your swimsuit; bring a towel. Waiver release form must be signed and medical conditions disclosed. Bring your C-card. Minimum age is 10 years. Children 12 years old and under are restricted to a maximum depth of 40 feet and require a private dive master at additional cost. Advance notification is requested to ensure availability. For all divers under 18 years of age, a parent/guardian signature is required on the release form. Maximum weight is 275 lbs. You must fill out a medical questionnaire, which will be reviewed by the tour operator. Whether or not the operator allows you to participate will depend upon the information provided. To avoid possible disappointment, you may wish to review the medical requirements for diving in advance, so that you can ask your physician about clearing any medical issues in writing. Samples of typical medical questionnaires can be found on the websites of the major dive associations, such as PADI (Professional Association of Dive Instructors) and NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors).
