Located in the west part of the Central Valley, the scenic town of Sarchi is considered the home of Costa Rica’s best wood craftsmanship. It was here, more than a century ago, that primitive local artists began painting and decorating their traditional oxcarts in intricate and colorful designs. There was spirited but good-natured competition among families to see who could create the most spectacular designs. The sturdy vehicles, hauled by pairs of oxen, became the primary means of transportation throughout the nation, bumping over rough roads and trails to carry elegantly dressed young ladies to festivals and dances in nearby villages.
Sarchi is known as the birthplace of Costa Rica’s ox-cart craftsmen. The world’s largest oxcart is on display here in the central park. This makes for a memorable photo opportunity.
Stop at the Eloy Alfaro Oxcart Factory -- the only oxcart factory still operating in Costa Rica. The machines here are authentically powered by a water wheel. Observe the work of the most skilled artisans, making beautiful wooden souvenirs and producing the world-famous hand-made ox carts -- a symbol of Costa Rica and its early culture.
A short distance from Sarchi, you will pass through the little town of Grecia, famous for its historic metal church. Stop here photos before you return to the ship.
Notes:
Travel time to Sarchi is approximately 1½ hours each way.
