Princess Juliana International Airport of St Maarten (code SXM) is one of the most popular attractions on the island. It is a legend in its own right because it is one of few places in the world where aircraft take off and land in absurd proximity to beachgoers. The runway is very short, and it ends right at Maho Bay's very nice beach, which happens to be a favorite for both locals and visitors.
In comfort and style, you have the opportunity today to acquaint yourself with this phenomenon. Board a boat whose name says it all -- Airport Adventure SXM -- for a scenic coastal ride from the dock in Philipsburg along to Maho Bay. The boat anchors in the bay and you'll wait (it won't be long!) for the next take-off or landing sequence to begin. You are free to do whatever you want -- watch the aircraft maneuvering right overhead, relax in a lounge chair on the boat deck, swim, noodle or snorkel -- it's up to you. Flotation devices are available for those not confident with swimming, and all gear is available in kid-friendly sizes.
Flight arrivals and departures are posted and announced, so you won't miss any of the fun. Meantime, enjoy the full bar and great food (at your own expense) offered on board at affordable prices.
The boat will take you back to the dock in Philipsburg at the end of the tour. This outing is suitable for the entire family and offers a completely different twist on the concept of first-class travel.
Equipment such as noodles and snorkel gear is provided; the certified rescue staff will keep an eye on the designated snorkel area at all times. The swimming area is big but does not include access to the beach. You can open a food and beverage tab and pay at your convenience by cash or credit card. Wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, sunscreen and a hat.
