Come experience the world-famous ruins of the walled city of Tulum.
Take a 45-minute ferry transfer to Playa del Carmen and a scenic one-hour, air-conditioned motorcoach ride to Tulum -- the only Mayan city built right on the coast overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Follow your guide through the ruins of dozens of restored temples, with mysterious hieroglyphic writings still visible today. Visit the Temple of the Frescos, famous for the detailed carved figures and original paints. Perched on the edge of the Caribbean, rising high above all of the other ruins, El Castillo boasts a breathtaking view of the aqua-colored water below.
Back in Playa del Carmen, you will have up to an hour of free time for shopping (depending upon the ferry schedule).
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes; bring your swimsuit, a towel, sunscreen and a hat. There is a 10-minute walk each way between the parking lot and the entrance to the ruins. An optional tram is available for guests who do not wish to walk (cost is approximately US$2 round trip -- price subject to change). This tour involves considerable walking on uneven limestone and loose stones and climbing on uneven rough surfaces. There is a government tax of US$5-8 on the use of video cameras at the ruins. No tripods and/or professional video cameras are allowed. Visitors are not allowed to climb some ruins due to their fragile state.
