Immerse yourself in the colorful culture and rich history of the place known as Cigar City, the Big Guava, and Tampa. Stop along the Hillsborough River for a brief look at Armature Works, former trolley barn for the Tampa Trolley and see Tampa’s original fresh water source. Continue along the river to the former Tampa Bay Hotel, now University of Tampa and be transformed back to a time of opulence and gentility. Modelled after the Alhambra palace in Spain, with a combination of Victorian and Moorish design, this National Historic Landmark once hosted the rich and famous.
Stroll the grounds of the University and if the building is open you can step inside and view the public spaces.
Drive through the Hyde Park area and along Bayshore Boulevard View mansions of the rich and learn a little about the band of Gasparilla pirates and crowds that invade this area each January. A brief trip over the bridge to Davis Islands provides a look into one of Tampa’s most interesting neighborhoods built on a sandbar that was turned into two islands.
Heading towards Ybor City pass Amalie Arena, home of -- The Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team. Then it’s on into Ybor City, once the cigar capital of the world, now one of Tampa's entertainment districts. The cigar industry moved from Key West to Tampa more than 100 years ago. See the ‘Shotgun Houses’ that housed the immigrant cigar workers who settled here.
A stop at Centro Ybor allows for a short break. Whether you choose to enjoy café con leche (sweet Cuban coffee) or a light snack at one of the many restaurants in this historic area (at your own expense), you will be surrounded by the old and the new.
The final leg of the tour swings by Raymond James Stadium home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers professional football team and pass the New York Yankees Spring Training facility, George Steinbrenner Field.
En route to Tampa International Airport, you will drive by Raymond James Stadium -- home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- and the New York Yankee's Spring Training location, George Steinbrenner Field.
