Approximately 3½ Hours
First time and non-certified divers can experience the wonders of beginning scuba diving in one of the most beautiful destinations in the Caribbean. Fulfill your dream of scuba diving right here in Costa Maya.
Meet the team from the dive center. They will assist you with registration, answer any questions, and make recommendations on equipment requirements to ensure a perfect fit.
At the dive center, a 10- to 15-minute ride away through the historical town of Mahahual, listen to a 45-minute briefing while the dive team prepares your equipment.
Head to the dive boat, custom-built for diving on the reef and holding between 6-12 participants.
Meet your group instructor (maximum of 4 participants per certified instructor), gear up, and familiarize yourself with the equipment under his/her expert supervision.
A short boat ride brings you to a calm dive site. Enter the water and take an introductory lesson on scuba in shallow water.
Next is the moment you’ve been waiting for -- an instructor-guided dive on the spectacular Meso-American Barrier Reef. The maximum depth of the dive will be between 20 and 40 feet for up to 45 minutes.
The breathtaking reef is known for its beautiful corals and exotic marine life. Marine life commonly seen includes sea turtles, lobsters, stingrays and an endless variety of tropical reef fish.
Return to the ship. Guests who wish to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so, but must return to the ship on their own. Taxis are abundant. Once a fishing village, Mahahual is now a small town thriving with wonderful beachfront shops, restaurants, bars, and arts and crafts booths.
Wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, sunscreen and a hat. Participants must be in good physical condition and able to swim. Waiver must be signed and medical conditions disclosed. Minimum age is 10 years. Children 12 years old and under are restricted to a maximum depth of 40 feet and require a private dive master at additional cost. Advance notification is requested to ensure availability. Maximum weight is 275 lbs. You must fill out a medical questionnaire, which will be reviewed by the tour operator. Whether or not the operator allows you to participate will depend upon the information provided. To avoid possible disappointment, you may wish to review the medical requirements for diving in advance, so that you can ask your physician about clearing any medical issues in writing. Samples of typical medical questionnaires can be found on the websites of the major dive associations, such as PADI (Professional Association of Dive Instructors) and NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors).
