Puerto Plata’s historical importance derives from its role in the first decade following the discovery of the Americas.

Pass the most famous landmarks of Puerto Plata with a drive along the malecón (waterfront) to see the San Felipe Fortress. Built in 1564, the fort was intended to protect the city from pirate activity.
