Your journey begins at the pier, where your guide will greet you. Leaving the port, you’ll travel through the main streets of Santo Tomás de Castilla. Enjoy a short panoramic drive along the seashore, passing the Naval Base as well as the Belgian Cemetery, where Belgian pioneers from the 19th century are buried. Continue to Puerto Barrios, capital of the Izabal County. With a history dating back to the 18th century, Puerto Barrios retains a frontier-town atmosphere. Here, locals and foreigners alike once fought to reap the benefits of the banana, coffee and sugar trades. Today, Puerto Barrios is one of the most important commercial ports in Guatemala. Your excursion concludes with a visit to the five-star Amatique Bay Resort, where you will enjoy refreshments before heading off to make the most of a small amount of free time to shop for local handicrafts. Finally, re-join the coach and return to the ship.
