Board a colorful, historic trolley and set out for a 30-minute panoramic drive through downtown San Diego en route to Balboa Park. Your friendly conductor will point out highlightsof downtown San Diego such as the charming Seaport Village on the bay, the massive Convention Center, the architecturally fascinating Horton Plaza outdoor shopping mall, the historic Gaslamp Quarter featuring Victorian-era architecture.
Step off the trolley in the heart of Balboa Park. The Visitor Center has all the information you need (brochures, maps, dining advice, etc.) for your self-guided visit to this 1,200-acre park that is home to 15 major museums, renowned performing arts venues, beautiful gardens and the San Diego Zoo. It is also the nation's largest urban cultural park. Enjoy a self-guided tour in the park with a chance to immerse yourself in the museums, culture and history of San Diego set against a backdrop of lush, verdant park land. Your excursion includes admission to four museums of your choice. There's an international museum, a museum of photographic arts, a science center, an air and space center, an automotive museum, model railroad museum, sports museum, natural history museum, Veteran's museum and several museums of art—something for every taste. All museums are kid friendly and the museum shops are open to the public without paying admission. Amusement attractions include the 1910 Balboa Park Carousel featuring hand-carved animals, a miniature railroad, the Spanish Village Art Center, an IMAX theater and Balboa Park's magnificent gardens. The Botanical Building is home to 2,100 permanent plants, including cycads, ferns, orchids, other tropical plants, and palms. There are more than twenty gardens, each with its own theme. The park is home to many restaurants and cafés where you can indulge in a delicious meal or snack (at your own expense). After your visit, re-board the trolley for the scenic drive back to the pier.
