Travel back in time and delve into Costa Rican history.

Take a seat aboard a newly-restored wagon of the historic Pacific Railroad -- founded more than a century ago to transport the country's valuable coffee harvest from the highlands to its coastal ports. A 30-minute low-speed ride takes you through the small town of Mata Limón and allows you to observe the rural scenes and mangrove swamps. Large windows and many photo opportunities contribute to your experience of Costa Rica's countryside.

Next, board a motorcoach and head to a branch of the Tarcoles River. Here you will step onto a riverboat. A very impressive breadth and depth of nature surrounds you as you cruise, with four different types of mangrove species. Each teems with herons, osprey, swallows, pelicans; frigate birds and kingfishers. The delta is home to large crocodile colonies, iguanas, lizards and other wildlife are also easily spotted searching for food along the riverbanks.

Before returning to the ship, you'll visit the El Jardín Market to browse for souvenirs, sample delicious tropical fruit, or taste a cup of freshly-brewed Costa Rican coffee.
