Located in the west part of the Central Valley, the pretty town of Sarchi is considered the home of Costa Rica's finest wooden crafts. More than a century ago, local artists here began painting and decorating their traditional oxcarts in intricate and colorful designs. There was spirited, but good-natured, competition among families to see who could create the most spectacular designs. These sturdy vehicles, hauled by pairs of oxen, soon became the primary means of transportation throughout the nation, bumping over rough roads and trails to carry elegantly-dressed young ladies to festivals and dances in nearby villages.
Your first stop today is at the Eloy Alfaro Oxcart Factory -- the only oxcart factory left in the country and a designated National Heritage site. The factory's machines are still powered by waterwheel, and you will observe the work of the skilled artisans as they make beautiful wooden souvenirs. These are the same artists that produce the original, world-famous handmade oxcarts -- a symbol of Costa Rica and its culture during its formative years.
Continue your tour with an educational walk at Else's Tropical Gardens. The paths are designed to follow a specific viewing order, taking you through many different gardens -- heliconias, bromeliads and succulents.
Else's Garden is also the perfect spot to learn all about the butterfly, its lifecycle and the special conditions required for butterflies to thrive and breed. You will hear about the environment required for caterpillars to become a new generation of butterfly, and you are invited to release newly-hatched butterflies into the wild, watching in wonder as they flutter away to freedom.
The butterfly release is one butterfly per two guests.
