Approximately 5 hours
This expedition combines wilderness, adventure, and connection with the virgin forests of Patagonia.
A 15-minute ride will take you along an outstandingly beautiful road up to the recently opened Aikén del Sur Private Park, on the banks of the placid, transparent waters of Riesco Lake. Covering an area of five square miles, the park contains a 65-foot-tall waterfall, indigenous perennial forests, caducifoliae of humid variety ferns (some typified for the first time in Chile), moss and lichen, endless prairies combining patriarchal myrtle and turf mingled with wild fuschia and calafate shrubbery, and macal and mallines (swamps).
At the park, first visit the Information Center, where an introduction to the whole area is provided. Interpretive stations will explain the bio-geographical history of the region through three nature trails. Stroll down the paths, complete with rails and bridges, to discover scenic sights and serene resting-places. Spectacular views of nearby lakes, rivers, hills and mountains meld with the song of indigenous birds such as the chucao and the hueta.
The River Trail immerses you in the deep nature of Patagonia as you traverse prairies and the humid forest that characterizes this part of the world. At the end of the trail, the impressive Old Man's Beard cascade awaits. There will be some free time for photos; then, return via the Waterfall Trail.
A delicious, typical Patagonian barbecue lunch (lamb) is served before you return to the ship.
Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. If you have dietary restrictions, please advise the shore excursion manager once on board the ship. Your guide will do his/her best to speak English, but please keep in mind that the limited tourism infrastructure here is part of the ports charm, and bear with any language difficulties he/she may encounter. The coach is not air-conditioned.
