Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala
Mayan Cosmology & Ancient Ruins
Information not currently available.
Approximately 9 Hours
Board air-conditioned transportation for the guided 2½-hour drive through the scenic countryside in Guatemala to the Maya site of Iximche -- a late post-classic archeological site in the western highlands. Iximche was the capital of the Kaqchikel Maya from AD 1470 until 1524, when it was abandoned.
Upon arrival, you will tour the site as your guide provides you with relevant information about the structures and the relevance of Maya cosmology and how that relates to our daily calendar. You might also be able to witness, from a distance, an authentic Maya ritual, since they are performed regularly on the site and are not part of a tourist attraction.
Head to a nearby local restaurant for a much-deserved lunch before returning to the pier, where your tour will end.
Wear comfortable walking shoes; bring sunglasses, a hat, biodegradable sunscreen and insect repellent. Elevation is more than 7,000 feet above sea level. Eat a substantial breakfast before the tour. Bring a light jacket for colder weather and/or rain.
