From the pier in Alter do Chão, you’ll travel by local coach on the one-hour journey to Bosque Santa Lucia (the Santa Lucia Arboretum). This area boasts more than 200 species of tree, including rubber trees. Brazil introduced the world to the rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis, and although the natural rubber trade no longer plays a significant part in the economy, it is forever linked to Brazil’s past.

Upon arrival at this woodland treasure, set out with your guide to explore its natural wonders on foot. Discover the different species of trees and their seeds, such as the Brazil nut and hardwood during your one-hour stroll.

Return to Alter de Chão, where free time is afforded for browsing at the pier area before re-boarding the ship.

Tour requires a substantial amount of walking over uneven ground (approximately one hour). Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Wear long trousers and boots or walking shoes; bring insect repellent. Local non-air-conditioned buses are used for transportation. Your guide will do his/her best to speak English, but please keep in mind that the limited tourism infrastructure of Alter do Chão is part of the city’s charm, and bear with any language difficulties he/she may encounter. Minimum age is 12 years.
