Your trip will begin with a drive along the Pan-American Highway. You will see Francisco de Aguirre Avenue and admire its marble replicas of classical statues before you head out of Coquimbo to the unique Elqui Valley. This is an astonishingly fertile area in the very heart of an arid desert plateau -- it is a strip of land irrigated by the Elqui River.

A one-hour ride brings you to the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, located at 7,200 feet above sea level. This amazing facility is one of the largest astronomical observatories in the Southern Hemisphere. After visiting the observatory, you will continue on your trip towards Vicuña, the main town in the Elqui Valley where Gabriela Mistral, the Nobel Prize-winning poet, was born.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, which will be followed by a short panoramic drive past the main square, Bauer Tower, and the church, before returning to the ship.

This tour is available only on select sailings and is dependent upon time in port.
