Gisborne, the first region in the world to see the sun each day, is the third-largest grape-growing region in New Zealand. A Mediterranean-style climate and fertile alluvial soils are the key ingredients to its success, which dates back to the 1850s. A wide range of grape varieties are grown here, but it is Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer for the region is most famous.
You will visit two of Gisborne's leading wineries -- Bushmere Estate and Matawhero Wines, both small, privately owned wineries making some excellent wines.
The Egan family, at Bushmere Estate, have been growing grapes for more than 30 years, and launched their own wine label in 2005. A tour of their vineyard and winery will include tastings and a light antipasto platter.
At nearby Matawhero Wines, you will meet members of the Searle Family who now have more than 40 acres in grapes. Sample some of their recent wines including Merlot, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.
Minimum age is 18 years.
