Meet beautiful Akaroa on a fully-narrated drive through this historic French whaling town.
Travel by mini-coach on a panoramic drive along Beach Road, through the township and around the bay, passing Daly's Wharf and Jubilee Park. Watch for the streets with French names, lined with churches, historic buildings and an eclectic array of specialty shops.
Drive up Rue Balguerie, passing Langlois-Eteveneaux Cottage -- one of the oldest buildings in Canterbury -- and the Akaroa Museum. Along Rue Jolie, you'll see the Gaiety Hall and many other historic buildings and quaint cottages restored to their original glory. Some have now been converted into shops or B&Bs.
Drive past the gates of the Garden of Tane and up the hill, passing the old Anglican and Catholic & Dissenters cemeteries that overlook the harbor.
Taking the Old Coach Road you'll have lovely views over Akaroa Harbour. Pause for photos at Akaroa's relocated lighthouse, built in 1878, before returning to the pier. Guests who wish to leave the tour at the Akaroa Lighthouse to explore its interior (the small admission fee is at your own expense) or stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so, but must walk back to the tender wharf on their own.
Wear comfortable walking shoes.
