Traveling by air-conditioned motor coach with your guide, you will drive past the bays and beaches of Nouméa en route to the Ouémo Peninsula.

Step out onto a 400-yard deck to see the mysterious Caledonian mangroves of Ouémo where you will have the opportunity to observe the wildlife here (some of the animals are very ancient species) and other components of this strange and remarkable habitat. The mangroves are highly threatened are assiduously protected to ensure their role in the ecosystem is not compromised. After your time at the mangroves, you will drive to the Ouemo Canon Lookout, where two large canons face the sea and Mont Dore. The canons were put in place to protect Noumea's east and southeast coasts. Fortunately, they have never been used, and later strategic analysis revealed that it was very improbable that any enemies would approach from these directions anyway! Take in the beautiful view over the lagoon of Nouméa and its bays; then return to the ship by way of the old residential area of Nouméa where the quaint houses are a silent testament to the island's colonial past.

Bring insect repellent and water; wear sunscreen and a hat.
