Escape to the tranquility of the hills overlooking the city of Noumea. Here, at an elevation of 548 feet, the Parc Forestier botanic gardens cover 85 acres. They include five acres of ponds and lakes, and are home to a large variety of wild and domestic birds. Take a guided tour along a well-marked walkway through this peaceful sanctuary for an insight into the flora and fauna of the South Pacific. Among the many species to be seen are the cagou-a flightless bird that is the symbol of New Caledonia. This bird has a unique call that is often mistaken barking dog.
Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing suited to the weather conditions. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water.
