Cruises from Rome (Civitavecchia)

Rome is both a modern bustling city and an ancient open-air museum. You can walk in the footsteps of emperors, have coffee in Renaissance piazzas and see contemporary art all in one afternoon before you leave on your cruise from Rome. Your sightseeing time in Rome begins at the nearby port of Civitavecchia, a seaside town with roots that stretch back to the Etruscan era. Take note of the Forte Michelangelo (both Bramante and Michelangelo had a hand in its design), and the lungomare, a lively stretch along the sea with beach clubs, bars and restaurants. Exploring Rome

Castel Sant'Angelo

Originally constructed as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian in the middle of the 2nd century, the striking circular monument has had many functions over the centuries. Climb to the top and be rewarded with a breathtaking view over Rome. See if you can spot some of the Eternal City’s most famous monuments from this birds-eye viewpoint.

Via Giulia

This kilometer-long cobblestoned street was commissioned by Pope Julius and designed by Bramante in the 16th century. Lined with grand palaces and impressive churches along its wide, straight length, it was a seat of Florentine power in Rome centuries ago. Note the vine-covered arch at the Ponte Sisto end: Designed by Michelangelo, this was intended to be a bridge to link the Palazzo Farnese to the Tiber River. Today the street is a destination for antique shoppers.

Colosseo

The Colosseum is probably Rome’s best-known landmark. Built by Emperor Vespasian in 72 C.E., the elaborate spectacles held here would have been as popular as today's Broadway blockbusters. Underneath the massive stone amphitheater is the Hypogeum, an intricate series of tunnels and elevators that transported animals, slaves and gladiators to the performance above.

Campomarzio70

Head to this beautiful boutique not far from the Spanish Steps for hard-to-find fragrances and cosmetics in an atmosphere more like an elegant townhouse than a store. Shop for a signature scent, a gorgeously scented Fornasetti candle or a winsome Chez Dédé bag stamped with the names of glamorous Italian locales.
