Elaine Allen and I both work on board Holland America Line ships booking future cruises for guests. I was recently on board ms Rotterdam and Elaine is on a break from ms Zuiderdam. During our vacation in San Diego, Calif., we were invited to share information by my long-time friend, Ms. Skalicky, at Hilltop High School Academy of Hospitality in the Tourism Department, in Chula Vista, a city near San Diego.

There were approximately 50 students in attendance from Ms. Skalicky’s class, travel destinations and Ms. Sheets’ marketing class.

Elaine and I shared stories of the more than 100 countries we have visited while employed on board Holland America Line vessels, as well as the numerous career opportunities available at sea. We further explained a bit about life at sea and what an incredible experience it is.

The junior and senior high school students were more than intrigued to learn about our experiences and asked numerous questions. It was a heartwarming experience for us to see the students’ faces light up when we explained to them their dreams of travel could come true (and they could even get paid for it) — if they set their desires and actions to it.
