On June 29th, Veendam honored Boatswain Rudy Willy Sumayku for 40 dedicated years with Holland America Line, as well as his upcoming retirement as he prepared to go home on July 1st.
The evening commenced in the Bosun Store with Chief Officer Geert van der Knaap presenting Rudy with letters of gratitude from both Stein Kruse and Brendan Vierra. The Nautical Department also presented Rudy with gifts including a watch and a plaque commemorating his career with Holland America Line.
Rudy gave a moving speech and said that he “cannot believe it has been 40 years since his first day with Holland America Line. It feels like only a few years have passed.” He then invited everyone to take part in the family makan, and to stay around for the celebratory party that took place after.
