Amsterdam’s Beach Clean-Up in Alaska

The beach clean up in Alaska went very well. When we arrived at the beach we split into two groups. The Allen Marine contingent consisted of the boat captain, engineer (Mike), a naturalist (Bill), and Margo who is attending Evergreen State College but interning for the Marine Conservation Institute in Sitka during the summer. One group went south with Bill and the other group went north with Mike, each of whom had radio communication with the boat. Both teams worked back toward the middle. Now it’s a VERY clean beach! Once back aboard the boat we did a little whale/sea otter watching on the way back to the ship, which everyone enjoyed. We arrived back at the Amsterdam around 3 p.m. Allen Marine provided sandwiches, macaroni and potato salads, cookies, chips, coffee, hot chocolate, and water. Overall, it was a great trip and everyone enjoyed it tremendously.

We on the Westerdam did ours the following day, we collected so much trash we filled two boats with it and had to leave still more in piles on the beach! I don’t think I will ever be able to use styrofoam again! The sandwiches were delicious after a hard day’s work though 🙂
