Quick Action Saves Woman on Zaandam

From left: Zaandam’s Cruise Director Eric Dowis and Entertainer Joel Mason received praise for their quick action to save a life.

A crew member, an entertainer and the medical team are credited with saving the life of a guest on ms Zaandam during a recent Alaska cruise. Cruise Director Eric Dowis and guest entertainer Joel Mason were near the Lido Pool when they noticed a commotion poolside. As they arrived at the pool, Dowis saw a woman on the bottom of the pool and immediately dove in, fully clothed, and brought her up. Mason signaled to nearby employees to call the medical team and then helped Dowis get the woman onto the deck.

Mason, who has had CPR training, checked for breathing and a pulse, and the woman had neither. He began CPR and she began to attempt to take a breath and recover a pulse. The medical team arrived and took over her care, and her breathing continued to improve. Other employees helped keep the area clear as the medical team worked on the woman. She went to the infirmary for continued treatment and has recovered.

President and CEO Stein Kruse and Senior Vice President, Fleet Operations, Dan Grausz have both recognized those on board for their quick action and assistance to the woman. Several guests who witnessed the employees’ effective response have written to the company to offer their praise and thanks for saving the woman.

“The kind of commitment you [Dowis] and Joel demonstrated is what truly sets apart the men and women of Holland America Line,” Grausz wrote to them.
