A spectacular 4th of July party and events with the theme red, white and blue were hosted by the ms Nieuw Jakarta’s Crew Committee. Management, local staff, students and crew celebrated America’s Independence Day with traditional 4th of July events such as the sack race, tug of water, water balloon toss, musical flags game, a crew show and a talent show.
As part of cross-cultural awareness, puzzles and quizzes about the United States and the holiday were given to students during the week leading up to the event and students were introduced to why Americans celebrate and the importance of the 4th of July to Americans in general by Robert “Nick” Nichols, Nieuw Jakarta’s Academic Director.
The event was topped off by an American picnic of 4th of July favorites such as hot dogs, French fries, fried chicken, ice cream, snacks and beverages. Performances included a special talent show produced by the different classes and the singing of “God Bless America” by the female Tamarind stewardess class. Another big hit with the audience was playing the game Bingo for the first time.
