Annabel Sualog, Nieuw Amsterdam’s guest relations manager, sent us this post about the wonderful evening she had in Milan celebrating Queen’s Day.
While the Nieuw Amsterdam’s construction is under way, the Queen’s Day Celebration also took place for which an official invitation was received from the Dutch Consulate in Venice inviting all Dutch crew members currently in the yard to join the Queen’s Day Celebrations at the Consul-General in Milan. Queen’s Day is celebrated annually with huge festivities in the Netherlands every April 30th.
Since the location is not that close, a 2.5 hours drive is needed to get to Milan from Venice. The event started at 6:30pm however due to traffic and restricted zone challenges, a part of the group got delayed. The group still made it just around 7:00pm to the venue and luckily enough with no unwanted souvenir of a parking ticket or entry to Milan.
The venue was in a handsome building in the inner city. The Consul General obviously had gathered very important people of the Milan society, as the Dutch Military envoy was patiently waiting outside the venue until the event was over.
The long drive did pay off and the Consul General was very pleased to receive the delegation from Holland America Line. Furthermore, the Consul General was indeed “in the know” and “in the loop” of things since she was also aware of the arrival of the Royal Princess Maxima for the christening of the newest addition to the Holland America fleet of the vessel Nieuw Amsterdam this coming July 4th.
The evening started with opening remarks from the Consul General followed by the singing of the Dutch National Anthem. Following is a time for guests and all invitees to mingle and enjoy the festivities. Surely enough, one of the event’s sponsor was Mr. Heineken, thus Heineken Beer flowed freely in the room in addition to the bubbly Champagne being passed around. The flowers were also remarkable and the herring—mmm…lekker!…no doubt that they had just been flown in from Holland to Milan that day in time for the event.
