The Filipino crew of the Nieuw Amsterdam might be busy getting ready for the launch of the newest addition to the fleet; however, the new build preparation did not deter them from making time for a wonderful part of Philippine history, which was the commemoration of their independence.
The Filipino Community celebrated their 112 years of independence on board the Nieuw Amsterdam last June 13. The community agreed to celebrate on this day although the official date is June 12, since all crew that was in Venice moved on board that day. The Guest Relations Manager, Annabel Sualog, took the lead to ask Holland America Line management and Fincantieri management for the approval to let us celebrate this on board. The event was attended by the ship’s officers (Captain Edward van Zaane, Hotel Manager Stan Kuppens, Safety Environmental and Health Compliance Officer Kieron Connelly, Chief Officer Jochem Bakker, Project Manager Henry Veringa and Newbuild Director Pieter Rijkaart, who was also the guest speaker of the program), other crew members and all Filipino crew on board at that time.
As part of the celebration, in the evening a Filipino gala dinner was prepared in the crew mess room.
