Celebrating Father’s Day With Wonderful Stories of Cruising With Dad

Sunday is Father’s Day, and it’s the day to celebrate the special dad or father-figure in your life! Just like we did for Mother’s Day, we asked our Facebook fans to share some cruising memories with dad, and we received some great photos with heartfelt stories. Thank you to everyone who commented and shared! Read a few of the stories that show why cruising with dad is a special and memorable adventure.

“Aboard HAL many times, all with my dad. We told him he was going to be a grandpa during a dinner at the Pinnacle Grill over New Year’s Eve. Twice last year, with another cruise planned for this December. So many special memories with my dad, and now with my son, who loves cruising with his Papa. Ice cream, pizza, beaches, trivia, games, and adventures!” — Jessica Smith (seen above.)

“In 2004 I cruised the Mediterranean on the Prinsendam with mom and dad, and I convinced my sisters to join us, as these were the best times with Dad. Just time to talk and visit and share experiences, away from all the distractions. Now Dad is gone and the memories of our cruises are still there, vivid as the colors of the Mediterranean. Thanks for the memories HAL.” — Jeannine O’Hagan

“In 2006, in celebration of his 85th birthday, my father took us on a family cruise aboard the Maasdam, a Canada New England cruise. There were nine of us in the group. While we pretty much did our own thing during the cruise, we all got together for drinks before dinner, and of course, dined together. That was my first of, so far, six cruises with HAL!” — Marty Covern (photo at right.)

“Sorry. I have no photo of my last cruise with my dad. I can only say when he was diagnosed with lymphoma his last request was that he and my mom and I take a last cruise with Holland America to Alaska. We made the best of this cruise even though he was very ill. Thanks Holland America for giving my dad a great last vacation! My husband and I are celebrating my 60th birthday this month by taking the same cruise!” — Tori Urbatch

“In 1961 I travelled from LeHarve to Montreal on Holland America’s Ryndam. At that time they were called Ocean liners. My dad was being transferred back to Canada from Zuibrucken, Germany. We accompanied him on this journey. We hit some rough water on the Atlantic Ocean and even some of the crew members were sea sick. The crossing took 5 days and then we proceeded in our Chev station wagon across Canada to Victoria/Esquimault, BC to our new home.” — Kathleen Lye

“It was 2013 and it was a full transit cruise of the Panama Canal on the Statendam. It was bittersweet as it was a trip that was postponed from 2012 due to the death of my mother and it was my fathers last trip before he was too sick to travel (he has since passed away as well). This picture was taken at the captains brunch. My parents were frequent cruisers with Holland America.” — Cathy Williams (Photo at left.)

“With my father-in-law going through the Panama Canal. He sat for hours watching the sites.” Calvin Marshall

“Last year’s Mediterranean cruise on Oosterdam. Our final day in Venice, as we toured Murano, Burano, and Torcello. Her Daddy took great delight in spraying all of us with water to cool us down.” — Victoria Morgan Hyde
