Video: The Start of a Cruise Industry Tradition

Hallo HAblog readers,

From time to time one asks himself how traditions start. Here is the answer on the question of how the tradition of blessing the ship’s bell started with Holland America Line. The tradition started with the dedication of the Statendam 4 on January 23, 1957 by HRH Crown Princess of the Netherlands. She poured a glass of Champagne over the ship’s bell that was located for the occasion in the tourist class dinning room of the ship (remember the Statendam was a tourist class ship with a small first class section).

Here is the video in Dutch of that memorable occasion back in 1957.

Greetings from the home port Rotterdam,

This is a wonderful glimpse of history! Of course I couldn’t understand a word that was said, but I loved seeing the old ship and how the people were dressed. Very neat. Thanks for sharing this.
