12 June 2012: Father and son Engel at the helm on the North Sea Canal near Amsterdam. Father Kees Engel on his sailing yacht the L’ Angelo and son Vincent Engel working as 2e officer at the helm on the Prinsendam. The farewell later with the ship’s horn was very emotional for both of them.

June 15, 1896: The company officially becomes known as Holland Amerika Lijn, however the initials NASM remain on the house flag. NASM of course stands for the original Dutch name of the company, Nederlandsch-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij.
June 2007: HAL launches a kids and teen Culinary Arts Center activity program to bring the joys of cooking to the younger set. June 6, 2006: Noordam rescues 22 refugees whose boat capsized in the Aegean Sea between Turkey and Greece. The efforts earned the crew recognition from the United Nations, United States Coast Guard, United States Navy and several international refugee organizations.

June 6, 2006: In cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service and the National Parks Service, HAL develops and launches the interactive computer-based “Avoiding Whale Strikes” training program. June 1, 2005: Holland America Line and Westmark Hotels, a subsidiary of HAL, break ground in Denali, Alaska, for a new lodge near Alaska’s Denali National Park. The 135-room lodge will service HAL’s CruiseTours, Gray Line of Alaska and independent guests. (The three-story property opened in May 2006.)
May 28, 2008: Zuiderdam completes the second phase of the Signature of Excellence enhancements.
