Happy Queen’s Day! Today marks the day that Her Majesty Queen Beatrix is ending her reign after 33 years and passing the crown to her eldest son, Willem-Alexander. He will be the Netherlands’ first king since Willem III died in 1890.
Holland America Line is proud of its roots in the Netherlands, from its founding in Rotterdam in 1873 to the christening of our ships by Queens Wilhelmina, Julianna and Beatrix, as well as Princess Margriet and, most recently, Princess Máxima.
In the above image, Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima, second from left, acts as Godmother to ms Nieuw Amsterdam in July 2010 in Venice, Italy, and poses on the ship’s bridge along with the senior officers who brought out Nieuw Amsterdam from left: Hotel Director Stan Kuppens, Chief Electrician Ed van Weijen, Chief Engineer Marcel Kiers, Chief Officer Jochem Bakker and Captain Edward van Zaane. In the image on the right, Her Majesty Queen Beatrix acts as Godmother to ms Eurodam in July 2008 and ceremoniously rings the ship’s bell during inaugural festivities in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. At the bottom, the Holland America Line ‘Signature Tulip’ honoring our 140th Anniversary, christened April 19, 2013, is featured.
Happy Queen’s Day to all who celebrate! Congratulations to the new King Willem-Alexander!
