New ‘Dive-In’ Eatery Serves Gourmet Burgers and Hot Dogs

Holland America Line is enhancing the Terrace Grill onboard and rebranding the popular lunch spot as “Dive-In at the Terrace Grill.” The outdoor bistro-style grill area by the ships’ Lido pool will feature new signature burgers, hot dogs and fries.

DiveIn_LogoSMThe first ships to open the new gourmet grill were ms Eurodam, ms Amsterdam and ms Maasdam. The remaining ships in the fleet will be opening Dive-In at the Terrace Grill throughout summer 2014. The areas will be decorated with new Dive-In signage and décor.

All of the signature burgers are hand-formed, freshly made beef patties featuring Holland America Line’s secret Dive-In Sauce, chop-chop lettuce and sliced tomato on a toasted brioche bun, in addition to other accoutrements. Guests can choose from burgers such as “The Gainer,” which is served with a mound of crispy frizzled onions; “The Cannonball” with gouda cheese, applewood smoked bacon and sweet caramelized onions; and “The High-Dive” with cheddar cheese. Guests in the mood for chicken can choose “The Back Flip” chicken breast burger topped with guacamole and all the burger dressings, while vegetarians can sample “The Freestyle,” a vegetarian burger with grilled portabella mushroom topped with melting Gouda and cheddar cheeses, avocado and Dive-In sauce.

Signature hot dogs feature Nathan’s Famous all beef dogs, all served with Dive-In Sauce in a poppy-seed bun. “The Dive-In Dog” is topped with American-style mustard and a mound of crispy frizzled onions; “The Dog Paddle” is topped with sauerkraut, crispy bacon bits and German mustard; while “The Dunkin’ Dog” is topped with melty cheese sauce, pickled jalapenos and chopped red onions.

DiveIn

No hamburger or hot dog would be complete without Dive-In French Fries, and guests can order them three ways: traditional, topped with Dive-In Sauce or smothered in melty cheese sauce.

The existing Taco Bar will continue to be available with the Dive-In at the Terrace Grill. Guests make their own taco with handmade tortillas or hard taco shells and a selection of popular condiments and fillings including chicken, beef and pork.

I never saw a single word about Turkey Burgers for those people that have had their Heart Attack and do now wish to do it again. Every, I repeat, every cruise I have been on (last 5 years when the turkey burger was first offered) the Lido Burger Bar has had the option of Turkey, vice Red Meat; which has always sold out on any two week or 30 day cruise. I found myself eating turkey burgers several times a day when the line in the Lido was just too long and I was not dresse for the Rotterdam Dining Room.

Soooo….. HAL. Question? Do you still have Turkey in the new Drive In? An are you going to ‘run-out’ of Turkey Burgers 1/2 way into a cruise again?

They need to serve Nathans and Dijon mustards besides the yellow stuff.

  • C. Pete

There has been several times when I and the wife have skipped the Lido etc, in favor of getting a dog from these grills!

  • Julie

Gus, thank you for your feedback. At this time there are no turkey burgers in the Dive-In. We will pass along your comments for consideration.

  • Ray S

Good to know about the availability of bacon. In the past I have gotten a burger outside then gone inside to the sandwich bar for the bacon. It would be nice if the Noordam got this change by June 9.

  • Nancy S

I was on the Eurodam in January for the Country Music Cruise and was startled and delighted when seeing the new Dive-In grill. The Cannonball burger was absolutely delicious with its melting gouda cheese oozing out the sides of the bun, and the caramelized onions having just enough al dente to be perfect. I’m hoping the Veendam got this new feature in its’ recent drydock – I’ll be on it sailing to New England and Canada late next week!

is het beetje hollands nu ook al uit jullie Dive-inn grill verdwenen.

The addition of the new Dive-In was great. The hamburgers were some of the best I’ve had on board. However, the fries were terrible. Why do places need to “batter” a french fry? Why can’t it be just a simple, but extremely well made fry be served? Is it because you can deliver a crisp fry? Not the way to go with this one. If you take the time to make a well made hand made patty, then take the time to make good fries. Together they make a great lunch.

Delicious burgers – I just wonder how long before HAL starts charging for them

  • Nellie De Jong

Turkey Burgers a must before we sail to Southern Carribean in Feb. , 2015

  • Jean Timmermeister

Please do not eliminate the vegetarian patty!

A Portabella mushroom is an addition and is NOT a substitute for a veggie patty !

There is no vegetarian entree ( with protein) in the Lido for lunch on any ship I have been on and the only option for vegetarians has been the Terrace Grill for years! Sure there is salad in the Lido , but the veggie burger at the grill has been my mainstay for years.
Please do not take that option away for vegetarians! It saves my day and means I can cruise with real food.
Thanks for your attention to this important matter!

LOVED!!! The Freestyle portabella mushroom burgers and the fries with the Dive-In sauce on the Westerdam!!! The pagers are a great touch too! Can’t wait for the roll-out to every ship!!!

We were on the Eurodam for 2 weeks in the Caribean, February of 2014, and were pleasantly surprised to see the changeover as we had sailed the Eurodam in September of 2013 from Amsterdam to New York when the make-over had not yet occurred

The Burgers were excellent and we would certainly recommend them to all future travelers just be prepared not to do it at lunchtime as there were long lines of people waiting to get their hands on one of these try after 1:30 and the lunch rush is over

  • Sue

I LOVE hamburgers, but not the frozen kind so I am really hoping by the end of July when I cruise the Oosterdam will have the dive in open. Will I be in luck?

  • Wendy Lumbert

We are really happy to see this upgrade to the Terrace Grill!! Thank you! Please do use the cheeses you mentioned in this article. Our last cruise we had the wagyu burger in the Pinnacle Grill and it came with processed cheese instead of the cheddar in the menu description. Awful.
Great choice using Nathan’s, and hand-formed patties instead of frozen pre-fab. We look forward to trying out the new Dive-In.

    Bring back the bratwursts!

  • Alexandra S

I enjoyed the Dive In on the Eurodam on the 16 day Mediterranean Expedition in April; as a vegetarian I was thrilled to have the portabella sandwich! The bun was otastes, the cheese was malty, the mushroom was marinated well and cooked perfectly! The delicious hot, crispy, battered fries added the perfect touch. My husband loved the Nathan’s hot dogs. I don’t recall of he had a burger but they looked frrsh.

  • Jim Warzniak

Will the hours for the Dive In Eatery be extended past 5 pm- it would be very nice
To just have a burger and fries or a hot dog instead of a big dinner. My wife and I are 4
Star mariners and generally take 30-+ day cruises and we often wish we could just be casual and
    Have a lite dinner.

    Thanks for the consideration.

Simple but different is always exciting. Consider allowing the Prinsendam to be a beta test bed for this new eating experience during this summer’s European cruise season (we’re booked on the Prinsendam July 13 thru August 10, 2014). We’d be honored to provide feedback, since most of the passengers who book cruises on this ship are senior citizens, many of whom have health problems which they put aside because they’re on vacation.
We’re 4 Star Mariners, Jim & Jan Gallagher

  • Don B.

Just shy of 4 star but will attain the level this summer. Enjoyed the Lido at the Terrace Grill and the burgers/franks and pizza. Once in a great while there has been chili also served. Any possibility of that being an occasional (or frequent) addition to the menu? Chili goes great with hot dogs or can be eaten as a supplement on the side. Thanks for the new Dive-In menu and hope you consider chili as an addition.

  • Fay

It was difficult to order a custom burger, dog, or chicken, e.g., without the sauce. I like my burgers to be neat, not messy. Otherwise, good. Please work on the pizzas though. I’ve had better frozen ones.

  • Carol

The Dive-In was the place for us on the Nieuw Amsterdam in March. I’m not much of a hot dog eater but this place was so good that it was hard to stay away from. We would have liked longer hours. I hope the Maasdam will have it available on the Canada/New England cruise. Our daughter and her boyfriend thought it was a winner!

  • Lynn

I haven’t been to the Dive-In yet, but I will add that I too am very sad about the loss of the Turkey Burgers from the menu. I do not care for chicken breasts on buns, I much prefer a ground/mince “white meat” option. I do hope that the decision is made to return the option of turkey burgers to the new Dive-In, and an option for the sweet potato fries I enjoyed so much! Also, will the burgers be customizable for people with allergies or who do not like certain items in the menu description. I look forward to trying to new Dive-In on my upcoming cruise, but I do hope the turkey burgers are returned before I board.

  • Mrs Helen Allen

Will the Oosterdam have this facility by December? We have often gone to the outside deck on other ships for lunch for burgers and dogs. Helen

  • Joan Loomis

Sorry to say the hamburgers and hot dogs on the Zuiderdam panama canal 4/18-5/10/14 were a big disappointment. Hamburgers were dry thick hunks of overcooked beef. Hot dogs horribly overcooked…no taste, surely those were not Nathans. That cheese sauce…clumpy straight from a can. If a human actually cooked it, they should have tasted it.
Taco bar could have been OK, guac straight from frozen-little flavor but provided hot sauce helped. Could have made your own nachos but no jalapenos. Other typical taco and nacho ingredients were missing. Had great potential with a little more thought. I did wonder how long the ingredients should sit out on the buffet not really very cold or hot. Was told they were replaced every four hours. I thought two hours was the standard so I worried a bit. Had a G.I. scare on board so taco bar closed completely, rather than have servers.serve it, as all the other food was done, it was just closed. Even with its limitations the taco bar was one of only a few things on board that tasted at all fresh and was spicy. I really missed food that was spicy. For example the jerk chicken in the MDR had no jerk flavor at all, certainly none of the many spices and heat that jerk chicken is known for. Please at least one authentic full flavor entree per meal

  • Kathleen

I enjoyed daily the salmon. Will it still be available. It was perfect for those on restricted diets!

  • Peg

Cruised in April 2014 on the Ryndam. The burgers at the Dive-In were exceptional! Naked fries a definite go with.

  • James Walter

I agree with Gus. Your turkey burgers are a great alternative to beef, and very good tasting. They should be part of the menu!

  • Carol P

I love the sound of these burgers. However, as I have coeliac disease, are there any gluten free options? Even if it is simply to go without the bun and have the meat and salad portion on a plate, I would be happy. I will be on ms Zaansam in March.

  • Jaap

We were on the Ryndam last april and noticed the Dive instead of the Terrace grill. The hambugers, dogs and fries are so much better than at the previous grill. We really enjoyed it, it was al long time ago that I had such a good burger !

  • Rebecca B

We were on the Noordam for their Dive-In roll out. Absolutely delightful! A definate step in the right direction – food choices for the young and the mature. Most days it’s salad bar for lunch, but it what a
treat to experience a dog and fries from the Dive-In.

  • JoAnn

    Joannvergnolle@gmail.com

The Dive- in is great.!! The food absolutely authentic, hot and fresh. I love the warm buns. You might think about adding hotdog chilli (without beans) which is very popular in the South, we call it a chilli dog. I love the new addition and the beepers just like the old drive in burger places!

  • steve

I agree with Gus. The turkey burgers at the Grill have always been delicious and something we eat at lunch quite often on Holland America. We don’t eat regular hamburgers that often but really like the turkey burgers

  • connie

This change sounds great! Looking forward to trying it. 2 questions:
    1. will it be available on the Veendam for our 35 day July 2014 cruise? 2. Celiac response requested here too. do you have GF sandwich buns and GF sauces for the hamburgers and hot dogs?
Thank you for the anticipated response!

  • Cathy S

Really hope you will still be offering the salmon burger and the turkey burger. We enjoy those a lot on our cruises for lunch. A lot of us older peeps out there are not big beef eaters.

  • Natalie

We were on the Maasdam 15 day repositioning cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Montreal on May 02 /14. We got tired of eating in the Lido, and tried the new Dive-In food. Wow! We ate there every day after! My husband was able to get a plain cheeseburger with the special sauce and “naked” fries and rated both as very good. I always had a hot dog, smothered with crunchy onions, sooo delicious! I must say, though, the fries are not great, too soft. The fries in the Lido, on the other hand, were exceptionally good, hot and crispy!

  • Frank C., 3 Star Guy

Nice upgrade on the burger menu…looking forward to stuffing a Cannonball down the gullet in November. By the way Holland America, what is Dive In Sauce? What is American style mustard ? Why not use what real hot dog aficionados use…deli style mustard !

  • Nancy C.

My husband and I are very disappointed that turkey burgers are no longer available. They are delicious and have been a mainstay of our heart-healthy diet. We’ve sailed with Holland America twice a year for the last few years and we enjoyed having turkey burgers several times on each cruise. We hope you will reconsider and make turkey burgers available in time for our next cruise in October.

  • Donna C

We were on the Noordam March 21. The changeover had already been complete. We seriously missed the fantastic salmon fillet. We are departing on another cruise on the Maasdam beginning May 31 and hope we will be able to order a salmon fillet from the Dive-in Grill!!!

  • gg

WILL NOT EVEN CONSIDER GOING ON ANOTHER CRUISE IF THE TURKEY AND LAMB BURGERS ARE REMOVED FROM THE MENU. SWEET POTATO FRIES AND BRATS ARE ALSO SOME THING THAT RAN OUT EARLY AND IF YOU TAKE AWAY OUR JOY S OF THE TIME WE SPEND ON LONG TRIPS AWAY FROM HOME TO RELAX AND HAVE FUN, THEN WHY WOULD ANYONE GET CONFINED TO A SHIP AND NOT HAVE AVAILABLE THE SIMPLE PLEASURES THEY WANT AND OR NEED TO GO HOME WITH ALL THE WONDERFUL STORIES OF (OH, REMEMBER THE MORNING WE MISSED BREAKFAST AND HAD THE LAMB BURGER WITH THE SWEET POTATOE FRIES AND YOU HAD THAT WONDERFUL TURKEY BURGE. WE HAD SO MUCH FUN SETTING OUTSIDE AND CAN’T WAIT TO GO BACK AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. IT WAS THE BEST TIME OF OUR LIVES ! ) .LISTEN TO THE CLIENTS OR LOSE THE BUSINESS. GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY NEED TO EXSPERIANCE ,FOR SOME, THE TRIP OF A LIFETIME. I TALK ABOUT MY TWO WEEK TRIP TO EVERY PERSON I TALK TO, EVEN STRANGERS AND TELL THEM THAT YOUR LINE IS THE ONLY LINE I WILL EVER GO ON AND IF IT IS NOT GOING TO BE THE SAME , I WILL NOT RETURN SO I CAN REMEMBER THE PERFECT TRIP I HAD THE LAST TIME I WENT. I REALLY DIDN’T HAVE THE FUNDS TO SPEND FOR A TRIP BUT NEEDED IT MORE THAN ANYTHING, AND IT TRULY CHANGED MY LIFE. THE CREW WAS WONDERFUL, THE FOOD WAS PERFECT. I DREAM OF GOING AGAIN, BUT WILL NOT CONCIDER GOING AGAIN IF THESE CHANGES THAT ARE HAPPENING ARE A SIGN THAT THE LAST TRIP MAY HAVE BEEN THE LAST TRIP. WOULD RATHER REMEMBER THE BEST TIME OF MY LIFE THAN BE DISSAPOINTED AND SPEND MONEY I DON’T HAVE ON A REGRET ! THANK YOU FOR THE CHANCE TO TELL ALL THE HARD WORKING STAFF THAT MADE MY TRIP SO PERFECT, IT TRULY WAS A DREAM TRIP FOR ME, AND IT BRINGS ME JOY DAILY REMEMBERING ALL THE WONDERFUL AND FUNNY THINGS THAT OCCURED ON BOARD. BEING PHYSICALLY HANDYCAPED I KNOW ALL THE EXTRA WORK THEY DID TO MAKE ME FEEL COMFORTABLE, AND WANT TO GO AGAIN IF I CAN. PLEASE DON’T CHANGE THE LITTLE THINGS THAT MAKE THE PASSENGERS SO HAPPY. I NEVER HAD A CHANCE TO EVEN TASTE THE BRATS. THEY WERE GONE SO FAST. THAT SHOULD BE A SIGN THAT THAT IS WHAT THEY WANTED. IT’S LIKE SAY, EVERYONE IS ENJOYING HAVING THE CHOCOLATE MOUSE SO LET’S TAKE IT OFF THE MENU. JUST ONE THING I NEVER SAW ON THE MENU THAT I WOULD HAVE LOVED FOR A TREAT. ALSO IF I MAY, FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE, AND DESSERTS WITH NO SUGER MADE WITH TRUVIA, WOULD BE NICE ALSO. PLEASE REMEMBER, IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT THEY TAKE HOME . I DIDN’T WANT QUANTITY, I WANTED QUALITY, MY GOAL WAS TO ALSO MAKE IT AS MUCH FUN FOR THE STAFF THAT I FELL IN LOVE WITH IN SUCH A SHORT TIME. I WANTED TO TAKE THEM ALL HOME WITH ME TO SEE THEIR SMILING FACES. IN FACT I WOULD SEEK OUT THOSE THAT LOOKED AS IF THEY WERE HAVING TROUBLE OR STRESS AND BEFRIEND THEM SO THAT EVERY TIME I SAW THEM THEY WOULD SMILE AND LOOK HAPPY. IT WAS HARD TO LEAVE THEM BEHIND ,BUT WAS THINKING THAT IF I WORKED VERY HARD ON GETTING BETTER I COULD GET A CHANCE TO RETURN TO SEE THEM AGAIN. AT THIS TIME I’M NOT SURE IF I WILL GET BACK EVER TO DO THAT BUT AM TRYING MY BEST TO GET BETTER. THESE PEOPLE GIVE UP THERE LIFE TO SERVE THE MASSES AND I HAVE SEEN THE WAY THEY ACT AND IT WAS VERY UPSETTING TO SEE, BUT I HOPE THEY KNOW THERE ARE SOME OF US THAT SEE THEM, AND I HOPE THE COMPANY LETS THEM KNOW HOW IMPORTANT THEY ARE TO THE ONE THAT NOT ONLY NEED THEM, BUT KNOW THAT THEY ARE DO A VERY DIFFICULT JOB TO MAKE OUR TIME WITH YOU SO SPECIAL. ONE MORE THING TO THE COMPANY. THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE THAT WORK FOR YOU THAT DO THE JOBS THAT NONE OF US WANT TO DO, AND PLEASE TELL THEM ONCE AND A WHILE THAT THEY ARE APPRICIATED, BUT SOMETIME THE PUBLIC IS BUSY HAVING A HOLIDAY AND SOME ARE JUST RUDE UNCARING PEOPLE. THEY ALSO MADE IT PERFECT FOR EVERYONE THAT TAKE IT FOR GRANTED THAT THE FACILITIES ARE BEAUTIFUL AND CLEAN BECAUSE OF THE SPECIAL PEOPLE THAT YOU DON’T EVEN SEE.

I just came home after 2 weeks on the maasdam. I wish I had gotten this email BEFORE my trip.
I sure would have taken advantage of the offerings.

  • Denice

We were on the Amsterdam for a 14 day Alaskan cruise. I found out HAL changed the Lido Deck Terrace Grille to the “Dive In”. Must say – I don’t like the new Dive In menu – if I want gourmet food, I will eat in the Dining Room (which I do at dinner). For lunch, I just want a good, regular burger with American cheese on a traditional hamburger roll. Where are the sweet potato fries? (they are not on the Lido Deck buffet either). Also, I prefer the taco bar meat to be ground not shredded. I love HAL and my Lido Deck lunch is something I look forward to … please don’t ruin it by making drastic changes.

  • Gerry P

Am I the only person who loved the lamburgers? OMG, on our last cruise I had the pleasure of having several, but I note they are not on the new Dive-In menu. I am hoping they might show up on a dining room menu for lunch or even at the Lido. DH has had several coronary events, so it would be great if he could get a turkey burger, but again, a no-show. We sail a T/A in October on the Nieuw Amsterdam, so will look forward to seeing what is available.

  • Mary odom

The burgers at the Dive in were delicious. I ate two, and lost count the number of times my teens ate.

  • Krissy

Just returned from a trip on the Zueridam and the burgers at the Dive in were Amazing as were the fries!!! We love a great burger and the Hi-dive with bacon was our choice; I recommend this!
I believe that I have the sauce figured out but can you please tell me the info. Otherwise I will have to make it to find out.
