Cruise Diary: Saturday, May 2, 2009

On board ms Ryndam at Long Beach, Calif.

Wednesday and Thursday were sea days, which meant sipping a spicy Bloody Mary on deck, playing Skip-Bo with new friends, shopping for a long-sleeved sweatshirt (we’re headed north to Canada in few days) and generally just relaxing, having fun and letting the marvelous crew on Ryndam take care of us.

On Thursday we also had a brunch for all Mariners on board. A large group — they filled the dining room twice.

Yesterday it was San Diego and a trip to the San Diego Zoo. I fearlessly proclaimed that, yes, I could take the sky tram and dangle over the treetops to get an overview of the zoo. I carefully sat dead center and tried not to wiggle. We could have taken the tram back to where we started, but I chose to stay firmly planted on terra firma. But at least I did it! The zoo was wonderful and a great way to spend a day ashore.

Jan holds on tight and smiles through her phobia on the sky ride over the San Diego Zoo.

Joan pauses in a quiet Japanese garden at the San Diego Zoo.

Jan, left, and Joan pose with the colorful flamingos at the San Diego Zoo. What a great backdrop.

We docked at Long Beach this morning, just a short distance from the Queen Mary. Kind of fun to see her.

The sail-away party at Long Beach was a great opportunity to get a shot of the Queen Mary, just a short distance from where Ryndam was docked. Jan is on the far left.

My traveling companion, Joan, has a stepdaughter who lives in Long Beach. We were able to reach her and we spent an enjoyable afternoon with her.

Back on the ship, it’s formal night and the Officer’s Black & White Ball after dinner. So, a busy night ahead. I can hear the music from the sail-away party on the aft deck. Must hurry there to join the fun.

Tomorrow, Catalina Island.

Jan Hinman lives in Seattle, Wash.
