Cruise Diary: I Like to Call It a Spa-aaah!

Days 84, 85, 86/ March 30, March 31, April 1:

After an ambitious three-night/four-day overland excursion that took us from our first port of call in India, Mangalore, to the Taj Mahal, the Pink City of Jaipur and Mumbai, we felt we could really use some serious relaxation! We found it at the Amsterdam’s Greenhouse Spa & Salon during a stretch of six days at sea en route to our exotic Egyptian ports! An oasis at sea, the full-service ocean-view facility located high on the vessel on Lido Deck 8 forward, and managed by Steiner, features a salon for hair, nails, barbering and teeth whitening; a state-of-the-art gymnasium; four treatment rooms for a varied menu of services, including everything from massage and facials to acupuncture; a couples’ treatment room; relaxation area with fresh fruits, cranberry juice and lemon-lime-flavored water; men’s and ladies’ saunas; changing rooms with lockers and showers; and a thermal suite with heated loungers, steam rooms and a hydro-pool.

It was to this heavenly thermal suite, decorated in relaxing greens and with panoramic views of the sea, that Humberto, Duffy (our bear that went around the world) and I headed after our overland tour in India. The warm water jets of the hydro-pool worked wonders on our tired muscles. The soothing, piped-in New Age music and the ocean views were delightful too for our psyches (after having experienced Mumbai’s incredible traffic!) and the fresh fruit, lemon-lime flavored water, cranberry juice available at the spa’s relaxation room were also refreshing for our bodies.

Day passes to the thermal suite (also multiple days, and even passes for the entire World Cruise) are available and popular, said Ping, a massage therapist at the Greenhouse Spa. The most requested service is massages, Ping said, particularly Swedish, hot stone and bamboo massages. A variety of packages and specials are offered daily both in port and at sea – aroma spa seaweed massage and float, anyone? Or maybe a lime and ginger body massage with warmed oils drizzled over your body? The spa is especially busy on sea days, and that generally goes double for the beauty salon on formal nights. Tip: If you would like your hair and nails done on formal nights, it is always best to make your appointments early on to get your preferred times. But whatever you go in for – maybe like us you are just looking for relaxation and renewal after extensive explorations ashore – the Greenhouse Spa will have you saying “aaah!”

The thermal suite is the first thing I book!
I was lucky enough last Alaskan cruise to get the entire week for 100.00 !
I look forward to my next Caribbean cruise and plan to, once again, book the thermal suite along with an accupunture treatment…and I’m sure a few more enroute:)
    HAL is the best!

Experienced the most wonderful Seaweed massage and Float with Ana on the Westerdam over Thanksgiving. I can’t wait to cruise again. I will book more spa days for sure.
