Part of the Holland America Line culture is to be a good corporate citizen. The company is proud of the relationships built with organizations in the line’s homeports around the country and in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Each year, Holland America Line hosts more than 25 shipboard charity luncheons for nearly 5,000 guests. In addition, Holland America Line and its corporate foundation’s charitable-giving programs provide cash sponsorships, in-kind donations, free- and reduced-fare cruise donations for nonprofit fundraising events, donations of usable shipboard items around the world, employee volunteerism and other philanthropic activities.
Onboard each ship in the fleet, Holland America Line also features On Deck for a Cause, which invites guests to participate in a noncompetitive 5k fundraising walk on every sailing. Proceeds are distributed among the American Cancer Society, Canadian Cancer Society, Cancer Council Australia, Cancer Research UK, Deutsche Krebshilfe (German Cancer Aid) and KWF Kankerbestrijding (Dutch Cancer Society).
Recently, Felix Hernandez, Joe Saunders and the Mariner Moose from the Seattle Mariners Major League Baseball team spent time with kids at Seattle Children’s Hospital as part of the Mariners Care Get Well Tour, presented by Holland America Line.
Additionally, the 26th annual Auction of Washington Wines (AWW), held Aug. 15-17 in Woodinville, Wash., at Chateau Ste. Michelle, raised more than $2 million for uncompensated care at Seattle Children’s Hospital and the Viticulture and Enology Program at Washington State University. Known as the region’s most prestigious charity wine event, the weekend featured the Picnic & Barrel Auction, winemaker dinners, the Columbia Winery Charity Race and the Wine Gala.
Holland America Line President & CEO and Seabourn Chairman Stein Kruse was a co-chair of this year’s program, along with Bob Betz of Betz Family Winery.
The Aug. 15 Picnic & Barrel Auction featured games, a silent auction and a barrel auction. On Aug. 16, wine lovers attended 16 winemaker dinners around the greater Seattle area at various locations including restaurants, wineries and private residences. The weekend concluded with the Columbia Winery Run and Walk on Saturday morning and the Wine Gala on Saturday evening. At the wine gala, our own Master Chef Rudi Sodamin created the salad course — Salad Bouquet with Pomegranate dressing — for the 700 guests.
Throughout the year, Holland America Line works with our community partners by hosting luncheons onboard the ships in our homeport communities. Some of the organizations we have hosted this year include Vista Hill, is a nonprofit organization in San Diego, Calif., that focuses on mental illness, substance abuse, and developmental disabilities for people of all ages; Branches, a nonprofit organization in South Florida that empowers people to move from poverty to prosperity; San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse; the Puget Sound Chapter of the American Cancer Society in honor of its 100th birthday; the Catholic Seafarers’ Center, is a social-service agency in Seattle that works to meet the spiritual and practical needs of seafarers and maritime workers visiting and living in Seattle, and the Seattle Men’s Chorus and Seattle Women’s Chorus, two of the largest community choruses in America.
