Captain’s Log: Pilots of the Inside Passage

Captain Werner Timmers

Aboard Zuiderdam.

Every week after sailing the inside passage we drop of our Canadian Pilots at a place called Triple Island. The pilot boat “Pathfinder” comes out from Prince Rupert about an hour away and the pilots climb down the ladder via a side door.

The Triple Island lighthouse has been there since 1920 and is one of the last permanently manned stations on the British Columbia Coast. The two-man crew rotates every 28 days and is flown in and out by helicopter since it is very dangerous to try and land a boat there especially in winter. From Triple Island we sail west out of Dixon Entrance and towards Alaska.

P.S. I would have posted a picture of the bear we saw this afternoon, but I was too busy looking at him and I forgot I had the camera in my pocket. Nice black bear. Next time better.

Best Regards,
Captain Werner Timmers
