Captain’s Log: Oosterdam Crew Visits Russian Tall Ship in Sitka

While the Oosterdam visited the port of Sitka, medical officers Dr. Brad Lee and LMO Sandra Luebbe together with agent Holy Reeder, were able to partake in a tour of the Russian tall sailing ship named Pallada. The Pallada is on a round-the-world tour which commenced Nov 2, 2007. On board are 144 students/cadets learning the basics of professional skills and maritime brotherhood. In each port of call, the Pallada is open for visits. A tour of the tall ship includes a large historic exposition of the “World Ocean” created by the Russian sailors. The ship was built in 1989 and has participated in various international regattas and sailing festivals in Europe, America, Australia and Asia. The Pallada carries 51 crew members and 144 students/cadets, is 360 feet long and sails with a speed of 11 knots (nautical mile per hour). It should be noted however that the Pallada is also listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the “Fastest Running Sailing Tall Ship in the World” after it ran at 18 knots.

Arjen van der Loo is Oosterdam’s captain.
