Captain’s Log: A Quiet Venice

Good morning from Venice! We are here for our 3rd day and although the weather has ‘turned’ (our first rain in 2 weeks), Venice is as magnificent as ever, the hustle and bustle of the canals, with the Vaparettos, (water buses), water taxis and the many work boats, which move every conceivable goods, from cement and bricks to fresh vegetables, around the city.

I caught the Grand Canal on a quiet moment, seizing the opportunity to look around one of my favourite cities during the evening, when most of the tourists were nowhere to be seen.

Jonathan Mercer is Nieuw Amsterdam’s captain.

Magnificent photos, Captain Mercer. The one of the Grand Canal at night is priceless. My wife and I had the pleasure of sailing with you on VEENDAM during her inaugural season in the Caribbean.
